Description Description Aircraft Carrier Liaoning – Meng PS-010 The PLAN CV-16 Liaoning is China’s first aircraft carrier, a vessel with a unique history that began in the Soviet Union. Originally laid down as the heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser Varyag, construction was halted after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The unfinished hull was sold to China in 1998, and after a challenging tow, it underwent extensive refurbishment and modification over the next decade in Dalian. The ship was finally commissioned into the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) in 2012 and renamed Liaoning. It has been continuously upgraded while primarily a training ship, allowing the PLAN to gain familiarity with carrier operations. It has participated in a variety of combat training and exercises. It is a vital step in China’s modern, blue-water navy development.
